Ricky Hatton is amongst the most beloved of all British boxers. Known for an aggressive fighting style, resilience and charisma both inside and outside of the ring, Hatton’s boxing legacy is secured the decades to come.
Hatton had some truly memorable bouts over the years, fighting all the big names of the time.
Hatton’s victory over Tszyu in 2005 earned him the IBF Light-Welterweight title in one of his most memorable wins.
His fights against legendary boxers such as Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao secured Hatton’s righful position at the pinnacle of the sport.
Ricky was born in Stockport, Manchester in 1978. From an early age, Hatton developed an interest in boxing, inspired by his dad and grandad who were both amateur boxers.
Hatton turned professional at the age of 18 in 1997. In his first professional bout, he defeated Colin McAuley in a TKO in the first round. What followed was a rapid rise through the professional ranks.
His first major title came in October 1999, where Hatton defeated Jon Thaxton to claim the British light-welterweight title.
It was in 2001 that Hatton won the World Boxing Union’s Light-Welterweight title after defeating Tony Pep. He was able to successfully defend this title on numerous occasions, beating fighters such as Eamonn Magee, Vince Phillips and Ben Tackie.
Hatton became an international name in 2005 when he faced Kostya Tszyu, who was reigning IBF Light-Welterweight champion, as well as a pound-for-pound contender. Hatton’s victory after the 11th round proved a major upset, catapulting Hatton’s fame onto the world stage.
In possibly Hatton’s most notorious bout, the Manchester fighter faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBC welterweight title in Las Vegas. Despite falling to defeat, Hatton’s aggresive style won him many plaudits.
Ricky returned to winning ways with victory over Juan Laczano and Paulie Malignaggi, helping to capture the IBO Light-Welterweight title in the process.
Hatton’s next major bout was against Manny Pacquaio in Las Vegas, 2009, fighting for the IBO and The Ring Light-Welterweight titles. Pacquaio delivered one of the most devastating performances of all time, knocking Hatton out in the second round.
After the loss to Pacquaio, Hatton announced his retirement in 2011. During this time, Hatton faced several personal challenges, which he was very open about with his fans, helping to further endear him to the sporting community.
Ricky did make a comeback, fighting Vyacheslav Senchenko, but retired shortly after the defeat.
After retiring, Hatton has grown into a successful boxing trainer and promoter, with Hatton Promotions helping to nurture a new generation of fighter.
